A popular holiday destination for many Irish travellers, the town of Albufeira is the premier holiday resort in Portugal’s Algarve region. The area boasts many stunning beaches, and with glorious weather across the year, this is a big draw for many Irish tourists who seek sun, sea and sand in the Algarve. Albufeira has so much more to offer than just beaches (although the beaches are indeed impressive).
Things to Do in Albufeira
Albufeira Old Town is popular with many visitors, with the character of the area, the stunning buildings and cobbled streets taking you on a journey back in time as this area of Albufeira still retains many characteristics of the old village. The town has a great variety of pubs, clubs and restaurants, with the Central Square providing a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy an evening meal and a drink.
One of the most popular attractions in Albufeira is the Zoomarine, a wonderful marine park with dolphin shows, tropical birds and an aquarium to enjoy. The Zoomarine also has a selection of kid-friendly activities and a water park with slides, rapids and wave pools, making it a big hit with kids and adults alike. Zoomarine is a highlight for many visitors holidaying in Albufeira.
As well as Zoomarine, there are a number of popular waterparks located in and around the Albufeira area, with Aqualand in particular worth checking out. The 12th-Century medieval castle of Paderne will give you something a little different to explore when visiting Albufeira, while the ancient Roman ruins of Cerro de Vila in nearby Vilamoura are another must see for those of you interested in getting to know more about the history and heritage of an area while travelling.

Along with beach breaks, golfing breaks are a big draw for travellers seeking the sun in Algarve, and Albufeira has three golf courses for you to enjoy (one 18-hole and two 9-hole courses). You can also enjoy many tours of the Algarve area from Albufeira, with boat trips and fishing trips of the region a hit with many visitors. You can even try your hand at some water sports while taking in views of the spectacular coastline.
