Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, located in the northwest on the Douro River. It is brilliant European city to visit with beautiful modern architecture, great nightlife and a top music and arts scene. It was declared the European Capital of Culture 2001, along with Rotterdam. Porto also has a wealth of historical site; all you need to do is visit the picturesque old quarter, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also home to the drink, port, which you can taste all around town.
The number of budget accommodation in Porto is very limited. In fact, you can probably count it on one hand. They are scattered throughout the city and almost all of these hotels at least have air conditioning, a complimentary buffet breakfast and tours bookings desk.
The two star range is much larger, numbering around 35 properties. Most of these offer complimentary buffet breakfast, free parking and some even welcome pets.
The three star selection is the largest of all the hotel ratings in the city, consisting of about 55 properties. There are a number of family hotels and business hotels with free WiFi, a bar and lounge and meeting rooms. You’ll find most of these around the northeast, near Estádio do Dragão, the home of football club FC Porto, or right in the centre, around São Bento railway station.
The four star accommodation range numbers about 45 and is made up of all different types of hotel. There are plenty of design and boutiques hotels, romantic hotels and pet-friendly hotels to be found around the city. There are also a number of four star spa hotels just outside the city centre with saunas, massage services and indoor pool.
There are around 10 five star hotels for those lavish breaks. These luxury hotels offer a wide range of facilities, including spas, pools, room service and extravagant restaurants.
