We booked a family room with a double and two single beds. This was the main reason we booked this hotel as our boys are too big to comfortably share a sofa bed like in other hotels so we paid a bit more to be able to have individual beds. On arrival we checked in and were given a room that just had a double bed. When we went to query it we were told a room with a double and two singles doesn’t exist in that hotel (not quite sure why Expedia lost it as an option then!). We were told that they do adjoining rooms so we decided we would have to do that. After several attempts we were told there were no adjoining rooms available but they could do rooms next door. Turns out there weren’t any of those either but they could do directly opposite. In exasperation (this whole process had now taken over half an hour) we agreed as we had a show to get to. Turns out the rooms were 5 rooms apart on opposite sides of the hall and through double doors. My husband and I ended up in a room each with a child each as it wasn’t safe to have them separate especially as one room was directly opposite the bank of lifts and had no internal locks. The room near the lifts was really noisy with the lifts pinging all night and the train station below. Not quite the family night away we had envisioned.

The hotel was rather tired but the bed was comfortable. After a burst water pipe the day before the lifts were out of order so we had to use the staff lifts in parts of a hotel that no one should see! This probably clouded my judgement and experience at the hotel. I certainly don’t think the hotel justified the £211 per night price

The location was ideal, very central and parking was convenient. Unfortunately the customer lifts were out of order and we hadn't been warned about this in advance. We arrived at 2.30, check in was 3pm and they were very strict that we couldnt check in even half an hour early. Everyone then had to stand in a long queue at the same time, and then we all had to queue to use the staff lifts once we'd checked in which wasn't great. There was also a very rude woman on reception, she dealt with us twice and wasn't polite or friendly on either occasion. Unfortunately, we wouldnt stay here again. Very disappointing.

Check in was poor. We arrived early paid £10 extra to check in early. The lady on the desk barely spoke a word to us handed us our key. She didn’t explain about the lifts or where our room was. We ended up on the ground floor where a very helpful lady on the desk helped us. She was a bit shocked at the poor welcome we had. She explained how the lifts worked as you had to swipe card to access the floors. And what floor our room was on etc. made it to the room. Room was lovely and large. Some wear on walls and bathroom floor but it was clean. The windows were so condensed we couldn’t see out of them. The next morning there was a river of water from the windows. Our key stopped working when we returned (apparently putting it with credit cards and phones can stop them working) not told about this. Woke up the next morning to find a note under the door saying there’s no hot water or heating but they are working on it. When we check out we mentioned this and said sorry but offered to refund some of our costs. Staff in the bar were lovely. The views from this area was fantastic

Whilst the location is great to get around walking with no problems the hotel is quite old and outdated. The room was very small and in general the hotel looks like it needs renovation. The bathroom is very old and just not a standard I would have expected from a Mercure brand.
